PURPOSE:To attain 'KANJI' (Chinese character)/'KANA' (Japanese syllabary) conversion by simple processing operation, to increase an input speed and to improve operatability by providing the titled device with a conversion mode setting means, a non-conversion input means and a selective input means. CONSTITUTION:A keyboard 1b mounts a character input key 4a for inputting characters, a conversion key 4b for setting a conversion mode for converting an inputted reading into 'KANJI', a selection key 4c, and a non-conversion key 4d. The key 4c determines a displayed 'KANJI' candidate or a converted reading and the key 4d returns a displayed 'KANJI' candidate into its reading 'KANA' characters or converts displayed 'KANA' characters into its corresponding 'KATAKANA' (square form of Japanese syllabary) in the conversion mode and determines these converted characters. When the key 4b is depressed, the candidate 'KANJI' is displayed, and when the keys 4d, 4c are depressed respectively once or the key 4d is depressed twice after depressing and determining the key 4c, the candidate character to be converted can be converted into a 'KANA' or 'KATAKANA' and then determined. Consequently, the input speed can be increased and the operatability can be improved.
