PURPOSE:To improve the mutual processing efficiency of magnetic tape media having different recording capacities by setting plural write heads around a read head and recording the write data reciprocatingly on a magnetic tape in a high density recording state. CONSTITUTION:When a high density recording mode is set, the data are written in the forward direction (1) of a wide track by means of a write head WH1 and a read head RH. While the data are written in the adverse direction (2) with use of a write head WH2 and the head RH. In this case, the number of tracks is doubled with the over-write given to the write data set in the direction (1). The supply of a current to the head WH1 and the production of a recording track in the direction (1) are carried out by a low/high density recording sheet part 31. Then a high density recording mode part 32 supplies a write current to the head WH2 and controls the production of recording tracks in the direction (2).
