PURPOSE:To reduce weight and to improve durability by laminating and forming underlying metallic films for plating, nonmagnetic metallic plating layers, magnetic material films and lubricative protective films successively on the surfaces of a plastic substrate. CONSTITUTION:This recording medium is constituted by forming the underlying layers 2, 2 for plating, the nonmagnetic metal plating layers 3, 3, the magnetic material films 4, 4 and the lubricative protective films 5, 5 successively on the plastic substrate 1 surfaces. The films 2, 2 having good adhesiveness are first formed on the substrates 1, 1 and the nonmagnetic metals are formed thereon by plating in such a manner and, therefore, the surfaces of the recording medium are good and head crash resistance (CSS resistance) is good. In addition, the surface hardness is increased by the plating layers 3 and the medium is not deformed in spite of contact by a magnetic head and in this point as well, contribution is made to an improvement in the CSS resistance. The formation of the above-mentioned respective layers may be on one face as well. The magnetic recording medium constituted in such a manner is light in weight, is highly durable and is obtainable at a low cost.
