PURPOSE:To easily manufacture an electrode member of Ti-Al intermetallic compound without using melting, casting, and cutting stages, by forming the electrode member by mixing powdered Al and powdered Ti in a specific ratio and subjecting the resulting powder mixture to vacuum sealing, to making dense, and to heat treatment in succession. CONSTITUTION:Powdered or granular Al or Al alloy and powdered or granular Ti or Ti alloy (<=about 5,000mu grain size, respectively) are mixed so that they form a composition consisting of, by weight, 14-63% Al and the balance Ti. The resulting mixture is put into a vessel and sealed and held at a temp. between ordinary temp. and about 550 deg.C in a vacuum state of about 10Torr which is made dense to about 95% relative density by means of extrusion, etc. Subsequently, heat treatment is applied in an inert-gas or reducing atmosphere at a temp. between about 600 deg.C and solidus temp., and then compression is applied by means of cold hydraulic pressing, etc., to regulate relative density to about 60-95%. In this way, the electrode member of Ti-Al alloy can be manufactured easily and inexpensively.
