PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound having improved quality, suppressing the formation of by-products, by carrying out thermal addition reaction of an olefin with maleic anhydride in the presence of an alpha-olefin/maleic anhydride copolymer. CONSTITUTION:The titled substance is produced by the thermal addition reaction of an olefin and maleic anhydride at 190-230 deg.C. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a polymer of formula (R is H or 4-58C alkyl; n is 2-30) at a concentration of 5-30wt.% (preferably 10-20wt.%) in the reaction mixture. Formation of by-products such as tarry substance and polymers can be suppressed by this process to prevent the discoloration of the product and obtain the product having improved quality. The alkenylsuccinic acid anhydride is useful as an additive for lubrication oil, an epoxy resin hardener, a resin modifier, a rust-preventive agent, etc. |
