PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound which is excellent in moldability etc., and shows a liquid crystal phase, by reacting 3,3'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid with a specified aromatic dicarboxylic acid, an aromatic dihydroxy compound and an aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid. CONSTITUTION:3,3'-Biphenyldicarboxylic acid (A) is mixed with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (B) of formula I [wherein R<1> is a bivalent aromatic hydrocarbon group, R<4>-XR<5> (wherein R<4-5> are each a bivalent aromatic hydrocarbon group, X is O, S sulfonyl, carbonyl, alkylene, ester residue or a direct bond), except for 3,3'-biphenyl], an aromatic dihydroxy compound (C) of formula II (wherein R<2> is any one of formulas III-IV or the like) and an aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid (D) of formula V (wherein R<3> is R<1> which may be 3,3'- biphenyl), and an acid anhydride is added to the obtained mixture. The resulting mixture is reacted while the acid (anhydride) is being distilled off. In this way, the title compound comprising 2-50equiv.% component A residues of formula VI, 0-50equiv.% component B residues of formula VII, 10-52equiv.% component C residues of formula VIII and 0-80equiv.% component D residues of formula IV and having a melt viscosity (at 275 deg.C, 100sec<-1>) >=50P can be obtained.
