PURPOSE:To easily detect a defect at a high speed by picking up an image so that the thread of a threaded part is clear, and finding the start position of the threaded neck part, and using an image pattern obtained according to the position. CONSTITUTION:The threaded neck part of a bottle 1 is lighted by a light source 3 through a diffusion plate 2 and its transmitted light is picked up by an image pickup device 5 arranged slantingly above. A signal from the image pickup device 5 is supplied to and processed by an image processor 6. At this time, the image pickup device 5 and bottle 1 are rotated relatively to search for the start position of the thread. Then an image pattern when one rotation of the bottle 1 based upon the start position as a reference is made, is compared with a gray scale pattern found previously with a standard bottle or dictionary pattern such as a binary-coded pattern to detect a defect such as chopping and cracking.
