PURPOSE:To make adaptable to various operational conditions a control quantity for controlling a suction air quantity even upon opening of a throttle valve by setting either of an upper limit or a lower limit to the control quantity. CONSTITUTION:An ECU 9 detects operational conditions of an engine 1 accord ing to engine operation parameter signal values from various sensors, and decides an auxiliary air quantity, that is, a valve opening command value to an AIC control valve 6 according to the operational conditions in accordance with a predetermined program. An upper limit and a lower limit of a feedback control value to be used in computing the valve opening command value are decided according to the engine operation conditions, so as to check a permis sible limit of the feedback control valve with the upper limit and the lower limit. Thus, the control value can be limited within a permissible range. Accord ingly, when the control value is gradually increased or decreased by the feed back control to fully open or close the control valve 6, and an engine load is suddenly decreased or increased, a control delay can be prevented.
