PURPOSE:To enable the reliable discrimination of crest and trough spots on a picture, by a method wherein a digital figure for a scale is moved along a contour and the crest and trough spots of a wave-shaped picture are identified as a variation in brightness level of picture elements on the basis of a variation in level of the picture elements of said figure. CONSTITUTION:A digital figure 1 is shaped in L at least and formed of five picture elements (1)-(5), for instance, and it is moved along the contour of a wave-shaped picture 2. On the occasion of this movement, the picture element (3) of the figure 1 is always moved along the upper-side contour of the picture 2 with the background. Then the level of the picture element (3) varies from black to white when the picture element (3) reaches a crest spot. When the figure 1 reaches a trough spot of the picture 2, the level of the picture element (5) varies from white to black. Consequently, it turns possible to discriminate the crest and trough spots of the picture 2. In a picture processing, the pitch of an object of measurement can be measured from the amount of movement in the direction of the X-axis of the figure 1, and the winding diameter from the amount of movement in the direction of the Y-axis thereof, in the process of detection of such characteristic points as stated above.
