PURPOSE:To simplify the constitution of a muting circuit by activating the muting circuit by means of a single muting switch respectively at the time of ejecting operation, quick feeding/rewinding operation and switching of tape traveling. CONSTITUTION:When a head plate 1 is moved from a non-playing position to a playing position, the muting switch S to be in the ON state on the non- playing position is switched and the muting circuit is inactivated by a 1st muting control means. When quick feeding and rewinding levers 75, 76 are depressed under said state, the muting circuit is activated by reciprocated strokes. When a tape reaches a terminal position in the playing state or the traveling direction of the tape is switched by manual operation, the muting switches in the OFF state are restored to the ON state, the muting circuit is activated, and after switching the switch S, the muting circuit is inactivated. Consequently, the muting mechanism can be simplified.
