PURPOSE:To automatically retrieve a character by a programmer without switching a window every time, by utilizing a relative distance between the character to be retrieved and the character desired to be extracted. CONSTITUTION:A text memory 1 in which a list file being displayed by an extraction window is stored is selected, and the character to be retrieved is stored in a retrieval character memory, then, the character to be retrieved is retrieved. As a result of retrieval, the absolute position of the character to be extracted is calculated by adding a registered relative distance when the character is found, and after the character decided by the character length of the character to be extracted is extracted, the character to be extracted is set on the retrieval character memory. Next, a text memory 2 in which a source file being displayed by a correction window is stored is selected, and the retrieval of an extracted character is performed, and when it is judged that a corresponding character is found, automatic retrieval is completed by moving the display position of the correction window to a retrieval position. In such a way, it is possible to retrieve the character required for an error command, etc., without switching the window by the programmer every time.
