An oil-in-water emulsion suitable for topical application to human skin includes, in addition to water, a vegetable oil and an emulsifier derived from soap which has been partially acidified with mineral acid to provide a mixture of soap and acidified soap (as fatty acid). The oil and emulsifier together form a fatty component whose composition falls within the area designated ABCDEFG on the diagram.
