PURPOSE:To correctly discriminate that by which recording mode, an image information signal recorded to a recording medium is recorded, by judging that an analog recording mode is obtained when a color burst signal is included in the image information signal reproduced from the recording medium. CONSTITUTION:An analog digital discriminating circuit identifies whether or not a color burst signal is recorded in a magnetic tape and discriminates an analog signal or a digital recording. Namely, a band pass filter (BPF) 42 inputs an RF input signal obtained through a video head and causes a prescribed low area (700 kHz or below) signal to pass through with the carry frequency of a low area converting chrominance signal as a center. A comparator 46 compares the output of a level detecting device 44 with a threshold Th and sends the signals of an H(high) level or an L(low) level. As the result, it is discriminated that when the signal of the H level is outputted from the comparator 46, an analog recording is executed and on the other hand, when the signal of the L level is outputted, a digital recording is executed.
