PURPOSE:To reduce the shaft-to-shaft distance between a shaft on which a gear-change clutch is installed and an idle shaft by fixing a short shaft part which projects out in front and in rear through the wall part of a transmission case and rotatably supporting a backing idle gear on the projecting part. CONSTITUTION:A backing gear-change clutch 22 and a fourth-cum-low gear gear-change clutch 23 are provided on a main shaft 17 in front and in rear across a wall part 19 provided in a transmission case, an idle gear 30 is rotatably provided on an idle shaft 38 which is fixed while projecting out through this wall part 19, and the backing driving gear 29 of a clutch inner 25 is engaged with the backing driven gear 31 of a counter shaft 18. Hence, both the shaft-to-shaft distances between the idle shaft 38 and the main shaft 17 as well as the counter shaft 18 on which second gear and third gear gear- change clutches 39, 40 are installed, can be reduced while reducing the diameter of the idle gear 30. Thereby, the device can be miniaturized while enabling the idle members to be firmly fixed to the wall part even if the wall part is relatively thin.
