PURPOSE:To keep relations between main scanning and subscanning constant to always record a distinct image by detecting the back and forth scanning direction of a laser beam of a deflector consisting of a reflection mirror, a coil, and ligament on the same insulating substrate. CONSTITUTION:When a deflector 40 is driven, scanning of the laser beam projected to the center of an image forming body 11 is started, and the laser beam passes a photodetector 20 and is inverted and passes the photodetector 20 again in the opposite direction. A detection output K generated at this time and an output L which passes one shot multivibrators (MV) 21a and 21b are inputted to an AND circuit 22 to obtain an index pulse M in the going direction. The time of image recording, the extinction time of the laser beam on the return path, and the time of light detection are obtained by MVs 23 and 24. Thus, the scanning direction of the laser beam is discriminated and scanning is correctly controlled to always record the distinct image.
