PURPOSE:To use an inexpensive solid-state image pickup element by discriminating whether the defect length is one picture element or two picture elements, and executing a linear interpolation from the previous and following signals in accordance with said result, so that a fault on the picture plane is scarcely observed visually. CONSTITUTION:An image pickup element 1 outputs a video signal by a clock period tau. White and black are detected by amplitude detectors 2, 3, and a defect level is detected by reference levels E1, 4, E2, 5, respectively. Signal forming circuits 6, 7 and a polarity inverting circuit 8 set a defect signal part as a positive polarity pulse of tau or 2tau, and both of them are added by a synthesizer 9. On the other hand, an output of the element 1 is led to delay elements 24, 11-14 of tau unit. The element 24 compensates a delay of a control signal which follows up a discriminatin of a judging circuit 10, and when there is no defect, an output of the element 12 is connected to a point (a) of a switch 23. At the time of the tau defect, the element 11 and 12 are added by an adder 15, reduced to 1/2 by an attenuator 16 and connected to a point (b). At the time of the 2tau defect, a compensating output is obtained to a point (c) from outputs of the elements 24, 12, and a compensating output is obtained to a point (d) from outputs of the elements 11, 14. The switch 23 is controlled by an output of the circuit 10, and becomes an output 25.
