PURPOSE:To easily produce optical fiber capable of uniformly scattering light by using substance having low viscosity not more than specified value as a coating agent in such a wire drawing process that a base material for optical fiber is made to a fine wire at high temp. and coating is performed. CONSTITUTION:A quartz rod free from a flaw on the surface is prepared as a base material for fiber and this base material is drawn in a wire drawing furnace to form fiber having prescribed size and thereafter it is passed through a coating CUP having prescribed bore diameter. At this time, a low-viscosity coating agent of <=1,400 cp viscosity is applied simultaneously thereon. This coating agent stuck on the surface of fiber is partially made granular on the surface of fiber after a short time. Thereafter when heating and drying the coating agent, the fiber having a shape shown as a figure is obtained. When transmitting light to this fiber, light is infiltrated into the coating agent and subjected to irregular reflection in the granular parts and discharged to the outside.
