PURPOSE:To easily point out the fault of an image sensor, by testing the image sensor in such a way that the difference in gradation between each bit in an oblique direction which is the same as the direction of a test pattern is calculated and the presence/absence of an abnormal bit is discriminated from the calculated difference. CONSTITUTION:A test pattern 9 which is formed by arranging black stripes at regular intervals in the oblique direction on a white background is read by means of the image sensor 2 and the difference in gradation between each bit in the oblique direction of the image data obtained by the sensor 2 is calculated by an arithmetic means 10. Then the state of the sensor 2 is discriminated by checking the presence/absence of an abnormal bit from the calculated results by means of a discriminating means 14. Since the gradation between each bit in the oblique direction of the image data is almost the same if the reading of the image sensor 2 is normal, the sensor is discriminated as faulty if the difference is larger than a prescribed value. Therefore, abnormality in the characteristic of the sensor 2 can be discriminated automatically in such way and, moreover, the faulty part of the sensor element can be pointed out precisely.
