PURPOSE:To improve the accuracy of an arithmetic processing, by performing the level detection of a digital AM modulation wave signal and shifting a level to the input level of a computing element preset in advance when an arithmetic operation to extract a square root is performed. CONSTITUTION:As a function apparatus to extract the square root of a sum of squares signal, a level detecting means 10 which performs the level detection of the sum of squares signal, an upside level shifter 11 which applies level correction by performing the upside level shifting, an arithmetic means which performs the arithmetic operation to extract the square root by a polynomial computing element 12, and a downside bit shifter 13 which applies the level correction by performing downside bit shifting are provided. In such a way, it is possible to form a digital AM demodulator capable of generating an AM demodulation signal with high accuracy by a comparatively simple digital arithmetic processing.
