PURPOSE:To enhance the intensity of transmitted light and contrast of a liquid crystal element so that a higher speed response is enabled by controlling the time for impressing an electric field in order to allow the transmission of the light to be applied to a liquid crystal material. CONSTITUTION:The spectral characteristic of the transmitted light is changed by changing the time for impressing a high-frequency signal to turn on the liquid crystal of an ECB (double refraction control type) in the case of subjecting the liquid crystal element formed by using the liquid crystal material exhibiting a dielectric dispersion for the above-mentioned liquid crystal element to two- frequency driving. The light transmittance at the time of shutter on is, therefore, increased and the contrast between the time of shutter on and the time of shutter off is improved. The ECB type liquid crystal formed by using the dielectric dispersion property is thus provided with the sufficient intensity of the transmitted light and the contrast and is driven at the high response speed.
