PURPOSE:To obtain the titled fiber, having a developed graphite structure and excellent electric conductivity, by using a specific trialkylbenzenemethylene based polymer compound, consisting essentially of a toluene-soluble substance and capable of exhibiting a low softening point as a raw material. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by the formula (m is an integer of >=1; R is H, methyl or ethyl) as a raw material is heat-treated to form a mesophase pitch, which is then melt spun and subjected to infusibilization treatment in air atmosphere. The resultant infusibilized pitch fiber is subsequently carbonized in an inert atmosphere and then subjected to graphitization treatment at 2,500-3,300 deg.C temperature to afford the aimed fiber.
