摘要 PURPOSE:To omit a bias magnetic field in an overwrite recording system, to simplify the constitution of a device and to reduce the size and weight of the device by specifying a magneto-optical recording medium and a recording system. CONSTITUTION:Three-layer structure consisting of a soft magnetic layer 14 having high Curie temperature, a vertically magnetized thin film (auxiliary layer) 13 having Curie temperature lower than the layer 14 and a vertically magnetized thin film (recording layer) 12 having anisotropic magnetic field larger than that of the thin film 13 and Curie temperature lower than that of the thin film 13 is formed. After initially magnetizing the thin films 12, 13 in the vertical one direction, information is recorded by modulating the intensity of optical beams in two strong and weak steps and is initialized so that the magnetization of the auxiliary layer 13 is arranged in one direction before new information is recorded. Since the intensity of optical beams can be modulated in the two strong and weak steps at the time of overwriting and the direction of magnetization of the recording layer 12 in an irradiation area can be aligned in one direction or another optional direction, overwriting can be attained without using a bias magnetic field.
