PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, which is high in stability against an aqueous slurry and high in capacity and which is also good in cycle characteristics and initial efficiency.SOLUTION: A negative electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, includes a negative electrode active material particle, the negative electrode active material particle containing a silicon compound (SiO: 0.5≤x≤1.6) in which a Li compound is contained. The negative electrode active material particle has, on a surface thereof, a cyclic carbonate layer containing cyclic carbonate therein.
