A method for preparing cyanaolkylphenols such as 4-(1-cyano-1-methylethyl)phenol by reacting cyanide ion in a form such as sodium cyanide with an alkenyl phenol such as 4-(2-propenyl)phenol. The cyanoalkylphenols are useful as chemical intermediates in the preparation of polyurethanes, polycarbonate monomers and epoxy resins.
