A controlled deflection roll comprises a rotary turbular roll cell and a stationary shaft. The rotary turbular roll cell entends through the roll cell supported at its end for carrying the shell defining a pressure chamber between the working face area of the shell and the shaft for transmitting forces from the roll cell to the shaft and supporting shell by fluid pressure in the chamber and a seal carried on the shaft between the shaft and shell maintaining pressure in the chamber, characterized in that the seal direction of shell rotation to induce flow of fluid carried by the inner face of the roll shell, past the seal is shaped on the trailing side of the chamber to prevent the escape of fluid from said chamber.
