A process for producing iron carbide-contg. acicular particles comprises (a) coating a needle-shaped iron oxyhydroxide with a sintering inhibitor and (b) contacting the coated iron oxyhydroxide with CO or a mixt. of CO and H2 after the dehydration. The inhibitor is opt. a silicon cpd., a boron cpd., an aluminium cpd., an aliphatic carboxylic acid or its salt., a phosphorus cpd., and a titanium cpd.. The particles are useful for the production of magnetic materials.
