Perpendicular magnetic recording magnetic head is provided in which the principal magnetic pole consists of an amorphous Co alloy which contains 1-5 atom % Hf and 4-10 atom % Ta. Also claimed is a thin layer magnetic head comprising a base plate composed of non-magnetic material on which a laminate is formed consisting of a core layer, a non-magnetic thin layer, and a second core layer. The core layers are made of the above Co alloy.
