PURPOSE:To enable highly accurate display in a relatively wide range, by a method wherein a scale in one direction of a map is arranged to be shifted to that different from the one in a direction orthogonal to that direction as required so that a scale value in one direction of the map is replaced with that in a direction orthogonal to that direction when a vehicle has changed the ongoing direction exceeding a specified angle. CONSTITUTION:A processor 1 reads out a data into a map data buffer memory 7 from a map data memory 2 to be stored into a display data buffer memory 8, and a map is displayed on a display section 4 based on the data. Moreover, by the operation of an ongoing-direction scale setting key 33 and a sidewise scale setting key 34 mounted on a control panel 3, longitudinal scale setting key 34 mounted on a control panel 3, longitudinal and lateral scales are changed to display a map. Then, the ongoing direction of a vehicle is detected with a bearing sensor 6 and compared with an original bearings stored into a bearing memory 9 and when the changed azimuth of the vehicle exceeds a specified angle, the longitudinal scale is replaced with the literal one on a display screen. Thus, the scale in a desired direction can be enlarged with the accuracy of the map being kept constant thereby enabling highly accurate display in a relatively wide range. |
