PURPOSE: To obtain an optically protecting topical composition containing solvohydroxamic acid and an antiinflammatory agent and useful for protecting the skin from a harmful effect caused by irradiation of ultraviolet rays such as sunburn, premature aging induced by the sunshine without preventing a sunburn response. CONSTITUTION: This optically protecting topical composition containing solvohydroxamic acid includes (A) a safe and optically protective amount, preferably 1-20wt.%, more preferably 2-5wt.% of the solvohydroxamic acid, (B) a safe and optically protective amount, preferably 0.1-10wt.%, more preferably 0.5-2wt.% of an antiinflammatory agent such as hydrocortisone, mefenamic acid and piroxicam, especially ibuprofen, naproxen and flufenamic acid and (C) a safe and optically effective amount of topical carrier, and preferably has a lotion, cream, gel, aerosol spray, cosmetic foundation or stick lip color form. The compound is preferably applied to the skin in 0.05-0.5mg/cm<2> of the component A and 0.01-0.1mg/cm<2> of the component B from 4hr before to 30min after exposure of the skin to the ultraviolet rays.
