PURPOSE:To economically realize the destination designating function of a network based on distributed control by adding a branch number to the address of a storage node to select the address of an added node at the time of adding the node to the hierarchical network. CONSTITUTION:When a new node 12 is added to the network, the added node 12 searches and selects a storage node 6, and the selected storage node 6 selects an unused address of a group of addresses obtained by adding branch numbers to its own address and designates this selected address as the address of the added node 12. Consequently, the hierarchical structure with the storage node 6 as the higher rank and the added node 12 as the lower rank is adopted, and the variable length address structure is adopted. In this case, the storage node 6 designates an unused address out of lower rank addresses, which belong to the node 6 itself, as the address of the added node 12 by the independent local judgement. Thus, the distributed control of the network destination designating function is easily realized by simple procedures.
