摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain the oriented film having particularly a high contrast ratio and excellent orientation control and response speed by forming the oriented film by using a specific polymer having the main chain of a bar-shaped structure. CONSTITUTION:The oriented film 7 of the liquid crystal element is formed by using the polymer having >=0.85 value of the viscosity index alpha of the equation indicated by the general equation [eta]=K.M<alpha> (where [eta] denotes the intrinsic viscosity in the soln. viscosity measuring method for the polymer; K denotes a constant; M denotes a mol.wt.; alpha denotes a viscosity index). The main chain of the polymer is rigid and attains the bar-shaped structure if the viscosity index alpha is >=0.85. The polymer itself is then liable to be easily oriented in a specified direction and the liquid crystal is liable to be easily oriented in this orientation direction. Such polymer is exemplified by polyfumarate, substd. polyacetylene, etc.
