PURPOSE:To selectively obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for rubber chemical, antioxidant, etc., free from discoloration at all by one-stage reaction readily by reacting a specific olefin with a substituted phenol derivative in the presence of a phosphorus compound and a carboxylic acid compound. CONSTITUTION:An olefin such as isobutylene shown by formula I [R<1> is H, halogen, alkyl, halogen-substituted alkyl, aryl, halogen-substituted aryl or alkyl- substituted aryl; R<2>-R<4> are H, halogen, alkyl, halogen-substituted alkyl or aralkyl) is reacted with a phenol derivative shown by formula II [R<5> is H, OH, halogen, alkyl, halogen-substituted alkyl, alkoxy or group shown by formula III (R<6>=R<1>; R<7>-R<9>=R<2>-R<4>)] in the presence of a phosphorus compound such as phosphoric acid and a carboxylic acid compound such as acetic acid to selectively give a 2,4disubstituted phenol shown by formula IV (Ra and Rb = group obtained by eliminating H from R<5>) or a 3,6-disubstituted phenol shown by formula V (Rc and Rd=Ra or Rb). |
