PURPOSE: To enable a faithful copy of a continuous gradation of an original by using a multiple laser, and incorporating a reflectance level corresponding to one of a white reflectance level, a black reflectance level and gray reflectance level in an image, thereby printing an array of image printing levels corresponding to a gray scale level. CONSTITUTION: An imaging optical beam 16 is emitted from an independent self-modulation infrared radiating diode laser 25, a maximum development occurs when an intensity of the beam 16 is maximum. Hence, a black image is obtained. When the beam is turned OFF, a white image is obtained. In a quaternary unit, two gray pixel reflectance levels are required. This is obtained by supplying two halftone imaging optical beam intensity levels. As a result, a development of a corresponding halftoning amount is generated, and predetermined bright gray and dark gray pixels are generated. Continued to a development of an electrostatic latent image on a photoreceiver 20 by a development accessory unit 37, the developed image is transferred to a printing sheet 41 in a transfer station 40.
