In order to monitor a redundant safety cut-off device in the form of an electromagnetic shut-off valve (ELAB) in internal combustion engines it is proposed to extend the diagnosis method used as a part of customer services in such a way that by means of the intentional actuation of a diagnosis key by the servicing personnel, if desired in addition to the customary fault diagnosis output, a test step "test ELAB" is realised by actuating the ELAB safety shut-off valve with supply voltage, which test step, after a predetermined time, indicates satisfactory functioning of the ELAB as result of the engine coming to a standstill. <IMAGE>
