New penam derivs. of formula (I) are antibacterial agents, where R1 is H, acyl or an amino protecting gp., R2 is H or lower alkyl, R3 is H, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio or formamido, R4 is carboxyl (opt. protected) or carboxylato, R is NHR5, NR5R6 or N:CR7R8, n is 1 or 2, R5 and R6 are OH (opt. protected), CN, sulpho or opt. substd. lower alkyl, aryl, acyl, carbamoyl, sulphamoyl, lower alkylsulphonyl or heterocyclic gps., R7 and R8 are H, carboxyl (opt. protected), CN or opt. substd. lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, aryl, amino, acyl, acyloxy, carbamoyl, carbamoyloxy, sulphamoyl, lower alkylthio, ureido or heterocyclic gps. or R7 and R8 together with the C atom to which they are attached form a cycloalkene or heterocyclic ring.
