Such a fragment can be used in a potential vaccine against AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), and for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The peptide has the sequence NH2-asparagine-proline-proline-isoleucine-proline-valine-glycine-glutamate-is_ oleucine-tyrosine-lysine-arginine-tryptophan-isoleucine-isoleucine-(cysteine)x_ -COOH, where x is 0 or 1.
