PURPOSE:To heighten intake air boost of an air cylinder by feeding compressed air to an intake air passage of another air cylinder through an air passage by way of opening an exhaust valve near the upper dead point. CONSTITUTION:A controller 5 detects engine speed with a rotation sensor 25 and an engine load with a load sensor 26, stops fuel injection to air cylinders 2, 3 from a fuel injection nozzle 30 at the specific time of low speed and a low load and simultaneously, shuts up a shutter 6 provided in the exhaust passage 16 of the cylinders 2, 3. Additionally a shutter 7 is opened as well as an exhaust valve 23 is opened near the upper dead point of compression stroke of the cylinders 2, 3 with electromagnetic valve drive devices 12, 13, and a shutter 8 is shut. Accordingly, the air flowing out from the opened exhaust valve 23 of the cylinders 2, 3 working as a pump flows in cylinders 1, 4 having opened their air intake ports 21 through intake air passages 18, 19 by way of an air passage 10. Consequently, it is possible to heighten the intake air boost of the cylinders 1, 4 and to improve ignition and combustion.
