A monotropic liquid crystal compound of formula (I) having decamethylene as a soft lattice is prepd. by reacting decamethylene-1,10-dibromide with p-oxybenzaldehyde to produce decamethylene-1,10-bis-p-oxybenzaldehyde of formula (II), reacting the compound (II) with p-ethyoxyaniline of formlula (III) in the ethanol solvent, and recrystallizating the reactant. In the formulas, X is CH3 or OH3. The compound (I) has a linkage gp. i.e. azomethine, ester, ether, azo or azoxy in the both sides of the soft lattice.
