A polymer for a contact lens is produced by polymerizing N-vinyl lactam with a small amount of crosslinking agent and polymn. initiator at 30-60 deg.C, copolymerizing the prepolymer with methacrylic acid ester contg. polymn. initiator at 40-80 deg.C, and heating the polymer at 80-140. The N-vinyl lactam is pref. N- vinyl pyrrolidone, and the acid ester is pref. methymethacrylate. The crosslinking agent is pref. di- or tri-vinyl cpd, or arylvinyl cpd, the initiator is pref. organic peroxide or azo cpd.
