A process for producing a highly water absorptive resin comprises (n) reverse suspension polymerizing 70-90 wt.pts. akali metal acrylate of 50-100 mole % neutralization degree, 10-30 wt.pts. methacrylic acid with a polymn. initiator an d N,N-methylene bisacryl amide as a plasticizer, (b) azeotropically distilling the polymer to reduce 15-35 wt.pts. water content and to produce the polymer of 100-150 m ave. particle dia., (c) treating it with 1.2-8 wt.pts. crosslinking agent to increase a surface crosslinking density, and (d) mixing it with 0.1-5.0 wt.pts. syloid. The resin has a good absorption velocity, gel-strength and fluidity.
