A headliner for passenger cars is described which is designed as a unitary self-supporting shell. It is produced by press moulding a random laid nonwoven fabric mat by means of applying pressure at elevated temperature. For this purpose, the random laid nonwoven fabric comprises a mixture of at least 30 % to a maximum of 90 % partly stretched polyester fibres made up to 100 % with fractions of polyester high-bulk fibres. The weight per unit area of the finished shell lies between 600 and 1200 g/m<2> and the thickness between 1 and 10 mm. The shell is laminated on its one fair-faced surface without the use of additional adhesive. The wall thickness of the shell may vary, seen over its surface area, and the compaction of the shell may be greater in the areas of its fastening elements than in other areas. |
