A variable speed wind turbine (10) is disclosed comprising a turbine rotor (12) that drives an AC induction generator (16 and 18), a power converter (20-34) that converts the generator output to fix ed- frequency AC power, a generator controller (38 and 40), and an inverter controller (50 and 52). The generator controller (38 an d 40) uses field orientation to regulate either stator cur- rents or voltages to control the torque reacted by the generator. The invert er controller (50 and 52) regulates the output currents to supply multi-phase AC power having leading or lagging currents at an angle specified by a power factor control signal.
