PURPOSE: To prepare a cosmetic composition, comprising a specific amide derivative and capable of reducing the moisture loss and improving the skin or hair quality by treating dried or damage skin or hair therewith. CONSTITUTION: This cosmetic composition comprises a compound represented by formula I Y is H or the all cis n-6,9-fatty acid residue represented by formula II [Z is OH or epoxy oxygen; (x) is 16-20; (y) is 24-36: (z) is 0-4, with the proviso that (y) is 26-36 when (z) is 0; (y) is 24-35 when (z) is 1-4; (a) is 7 49; (b) is 10 98]; A is (CH2 )c [(c) is 1-6] or formula III (X<1> to X<3> are each H, a 1-5C alkyl or a hydroxyalkyl; R<1> is H, a saccharide residue or a phosphoric acid residue); B is represented by formula IV (R<2> is R<1> ; R<3> is an 8-28C aliphatic hydrocarbon group, etc.)}, e.g. N-(2-hydroxy-3-hexadecyloxypropyl)-N-2- hydroxyethyl-ω-O-linoleoyldocosanamide together with a vehicle permissible in a cosmetic. A surfactant, a vegetable or an animal or a synthetic ceramide, is suitably formulated in the composition.
