PURPOSE: To reduce the discharge of HC, CO and NOx by improving the structure of a combustion chamber of a diesel engine. CONSTITUTION: A compound combustion chamber structure is provided with a piston cavity comprising a main combustion chamber C having the diameter (d) set to a piston P of the diameter D, and a plurality of air sub chambers CA of the partially circular shape, which is located on the circumference having the radius B of 0.105D-0.238D or 0.190d-0.446d from the center (a) of the main combustion chamber C, and furthermore with its center at (b) located between fuel injection sprays and having the radius A of 0.095-0.200D or 0.179-0.370d and is connected from an upper end of the main combustion chamber to its lower end. The fuel is mixed with the secondary air in the air sub chambers CA to promote the combustion while diffusing in the direction of the swirl, the quantity of HC and CO is sufficiently reduced, and the quantity of NOx is also sufficiently reduced by the cooling effect to the secondary air.
