PURPOSE:To obtain a random copolymer having unsaturated hydrocarbon bonds and essentially consisting of propylene and a specified diene by copolymerizing specified monomers in the presence of a catalyst comprising a specified transi tion metal compound and an aluminoxane. CONSTITUTION:Monomers which can give repeating units of formulas I-III are copolymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising a transition metal compound of the formula: Qa(C5H5-a-bR<1>b)C5H5-a-cR<2>c)MeXY [wherein C5 H5-a-bR<1>b and C5H5-a-cR<2>c are each a conjugated five-membered ligand coordinated to Me, R<1> and R<2> are each a 1-20C hydrocarbon residue, halogen, alkoxy or an Si-, P- or N-containing hydrocarbon group, Q is a bonding group which bridges the two conjugated five-membered ligands, Me is a group IV-VIB transition element, X and Y are each H, halogen, hydrocarbyl, alkoxy, amino or a P- or Si-containing hydrocarbon group, (a) is 0 or 1, 0<=b<=4, and 0<=c<=4) and an aluminoxane to obtain a propylene random copolymer comprising 70-99.9mol% formula I, 0-15mol% formula II and 0.1-30mol% formula III.
