The propeller (11) is attached to the mainshaft (13) passing through a hollow layshaft (16) mounted between the main bearings (14,15). This engages with other geared shafts (21,25,29) to drive the generator (33). A geared coupling (19) links the main and lay shafts, consisting of an outer shell with two gear racks around its inner circumference which engage with the teeth on the outside of annuli attached to the two shafts. The gear profile of the teeth on the mainshaft annulus is tapered so that there can be angular displacement of the mainshaft caused by wind forces without this being transmitted to the rest of the gearbox. ADVANTAGE - Less wear in gearbox because bending moments on mainshaft are not transmitted through. |
