Proposed are a method and a device for monitoring a drive unit which comprises a component (11) driven by means of a belt (10). The rotational speed of the component (11) is measured, the measured speed compared with a threshold value (19) established as a function of the rotational-speed signal (15, 17) and, if the threshold speed (19) is exceeded, a malfunction signal (27) generated. The method proposed and the device for carrying out the method make it possible to detect the onset of slipping or irregular slipping between the driving component and the driven component (11) which can be caused by, for instance, the beginning of failure of the drive belt (10).
