A coal/water slurry for the hydraulic transport to a fluidised bed furnace is prepd in two stages. In the first stage, the raw crushed coal is mixed with water and with a dosed admixture of a sulphur-binding additive. In a second stage the final mixt is prepd from the raw coal. The fines required for a hydraulic transport are pref prepd in the first stage. The viscosity of the mixt in the second stage is measured and water is added as a function of the viscosity. Alternatively the mixing process in the first stage is altered to change the proportion of fines.
