A movable control head (20) is located on a fixed support under which is the gas container to be tested. A pressure reference device on the top of the gas container is fixed on the control head. Two jaws (21,22) fixed on the control head move in a horizontal direction with respect to a vertical axis (P1) so that each of the jaws co-operates with the exterior thread of the container neck so as to measure the external diameter of the neck. An inductive detector (40) connected to the jaws is designed to record and transmit to an electronic unit (41) data related to the displacement of the jaws. USE/ADVANTAGE - Provides precise measurement of thread dimensions of neck of gas container for comparison against reference to eliminate those bottles exceeding tolerance.
