A vehicle occupant protection system e.g. comprising inflatable air bags is triggered by a controller on the basis of received vehicle acceleration signals. Two acceleration sensors (10,12) are employed, ore for forward mation perpendicular to that direction. The controller output stage (18) receives bath signals. That from the second sensor can be used to change an evaluating algorithm of the controller, to ensure triggering of the protection system if the overall accleration of the vehicle renders it desirable.
